A fourth birthday

Last week our youngest turned four. He asked for a “Pirates” birthday party and we asked his little guests to dress up for the afternoon. And they all did! So my husband I had 7 little Pirates to entertain that afternoon.

We had a great time and the weather was oh sooooooooooooooooo nice! The kids had their cakes and dinner outside (not many sticky fingers and therefor not much dirt inside the house, yay!!!)

We had a Photo-Treasure-Hunt that took us through the forest for 40 Minutes (each clue was a photo of the place where I had hidden the next clue/photo).

The hints took us back to our sandbox where I had burried some “golden” coins, glittery “pearls”, a little glow-in-the-dark-skeleton and some glass-jewels for everyone.

To prevent the keener kids to take away ALL the treasures, they were asked to just collect the treasures that were pictured on their individual treasure-card (aka the photo I had previously made of a set of treasures).

For dinner we had “Seasnakes with Pirate’s blood” (aka Spaghetti with tomato sauce) and some syringes filled with “Pirate’s Blood” and “Krakens’ Guck” (aka Jell-O)

We had so much fun (and I was sooooo exhausted that evening…) and I think this was a birthday party to remember (for all of us).

Next up is big bro’s birthday in October… so many preparations… so much to do…

Birthday preps (1)

Our eldest son turns 5 the day after tomorrow and there’s quite some excitement in the air over here. Since around easter he repeatedly asked when it would finally be his birthday. He could hardly endure his brother’s birthday 5 weeks ago and shed many tears of disappointment when little bro opened his presents.

He “wrote” his invitations last weekend and handed them out last monday. Since then he is counting down and first thing in the morning he tells me how often he will have to go to sleep until his birthday. Beams and giggles and laughter. Love his excitement and cheerful anticipation (o:

His party theme is “Pirates” and when I decided he wasn’t too old for a birthday crown, I quickly chose this pirates print from my stash. It took about one hour to plan, draw, cut, fuse and sew the crown and I think he will like it.



I used an interfacing I usually use for bags and it turned out quite sturdy.
Then I added some velcro so it fits his head perfectly



I’m happy with how it turned out eventually and will make some more to give away as birthday presents (added to that already too long to-sew list). I guess without the planning it might be done in 45 minutes or less.

T-shirts for my boys

Last weekend I “discovered” some cute knits in my stash. Hidden in a box where I store all my non-quilting fabrics. As I was looking for something to do while my youngest was playing inside (outside it was pouring again) I decided to make my boys some t-shirts. I never made t-shirts before. Infact I swore never to make them garments again. Last time that was a complete disaster. I made vests that they refused to wear. My eldest eventually consented to it (some bribery might have been involved) but my youngest ran away every time I even mentioned that “cute pirate vest”. You name it. Great success.

So tees this time. And I have to admit they were fun to make and faster than I had estimated. I ripped open the seams of an old torn tee that was sligtly too small for my eldest.



Then I cut the front and back in halves to use them as templates on my folded fabrics.



I used some cuff fabric to give it a nice finish and secured the serged seams in place by stitching all around the cuffs with a triple straight stitch.

Infact the t-shirts are the same size so they are a bit too large for the one and a bit too small for the other… But they don’t care and I’m happy that they don’t have to be talked into wearing them…

I have been cutting into even more fabrics last friday but more about that next time.
