ninja birthday party

Little boy chose a ninja theme for his 6th birthday.

We asked his little guests to dress in black – some even came fully dressed as ninjas. They all received red strips of knit fabric as belts and head bands. Then we started our ninja boot camp and we headed into the forest.

ninja boys

The boys had to pass tests, proving their ninja qualities, such as balancing…

… fighting with double-bladed ninja swords…

…running and afterwards sneaking silently through the forest (my fabourite part)…

…aiming (we had two games, one with water pistols and this one with nerf guns)

shooting

After passing all the test, every ninja apprentice received his own ninja sword (a red pool noodle with black “taped” handle)…

…and his own ninja mask (I bought cheap balaclavas and added a red strip of knit fabric).

I thought I’d share our birthday party with you because it was a huge success with the boys.

Enjoy planning your own ninja party!

A fourth birthday

Last week our youngest turned four. He asked for a “Pirates” birthday party and we asked his little guests to dress up for the afternoon. And they all did! So my husband I had 7 little Pirates to entertain that afternoon.

Piratenschiff

We had a great time and the weather was oh sooooooooooooooooo nice! The kids had their cakes and dinner outside (not many sticky fingers and therefor not much dirt inside the house, yay!!!)

DSC_0289

We had a Photo-Treasure-Hunt that took us through the forest for 40 Minutes (each clue was a photo of the place where I had hidden the next clue/photo).

Treasure Hunt

The hints took us back to our sandbox where I had burried some “golden” coins, glittery “pearls”, a little glow-in-the-dark-skeleton and some glass-jewels for everyone.

To prevent the keener kids to take away ALL the treasures, they were asked to just collect the treasures that were pictured on their individual treasure-card (aka the photo I had previously made of a set of treasures).

Schatzsuche

And here is my little pirate and his big skeleton brother (-:

Rupert PiratMaximilian Skelett

For dinner we had “Seasnakes with Pirate’s blood” (aka Spaghetti with tomato sauce) and some syringes filled with “Pirate’s Blood” and “Krakens’ Guck” (aka Jell-O)

We had so much fun (and I was sooooo exhausted that evening…) and I think this was a birthday party to remember (for all of us).

Next up is big bro’s birthday in October… so many preparations… so much to do…

I hope to be back with some sewing news soon!
Have a nice weekend everyone!

Bus-y Words - A quilt for my Dad.

My dad turned 60 a month ago. Around christmas I decided to make him a quilt. The inspiration for that quilt was obvious. My dad loves his old Volkswagen Bus. A Limited Edition Bus. In 1992, VW offered 2500 Busses in two colour ways: red and blue. Many owners of those “Last Limited Edition” Busses meet regularly. It’s kind of a fanclub that you can only be part of if you own one of those 2500 busses. Here’s a photo of their meeting 2006 in Berlin:

Or 2011 in Prutz, Austria:

He is kind of crazy when it comes to his Bus.
So this blue Volkswagen Bus was the theme for his birthday quilt. I needed a proper sketch of his bus so I could trace it onto fabric. I found a technical drawing online:

Bulli Skizze

The only thing I had to re-design were the alloy rims, as he had soon decided that the original ones were too small (o: I searched for a photo of his bus to trace his light-alloy rims:

Then I started fusing fabric on double sided fusible web, tracing, cutting, sewing and applique-ing.

Papas Quilt Bulli

The next thing was the Limited Number. VW produced 2.500 Busses for this Last Limited Edition. Here is the number of my Dad’s Bus and the special sign for this Edition:

Papas Quilt (1) Papas Quilt

And this was the worst part: Cutting all these tiny letters and numbers…

Snipping away

And then I had to fuse the letters to the background and attach them with a zigzag stitch.

Papas Quilt Applique

Here is “his” number: 134:

And without further ado, here comes the quilt I made for my Dad’s 60th Birthday:

Papas Quilt Outdoor

This is a close up of all the appliqued parts.

Papas Quilt Close Up

It took some time to get this amout of applique done and the best was yet to come! I tried some new free motion quilting! Instead of making a label on the back, I wrote the entire message all over the quilt top! It is hard to see but the entire background is quilted with words. To make it visible I used the flash of my camera:

Papas Quilt FMQ before washing

To spread the words evenly over the quilt it took lots of planing and preparations and I ended up pre-marking the words.

Papas Quilt Detail of FMQ and Binding

Above you can see the pre-wash state with the chalk-marked letters.
And below you see the post-washed state.

Papas Quilt Quilting after washing

In case you wondered WHAT I wrote all over the quilttop: A congratulation to his birthday, an enumeration of all the ways he used his VW Bus (shuttle for kids and their friends, bus for our athletics’ group, camper, wedding-“carriage” at my sister’s wedding, etc.), and an enumeration of all the countries he visited with his bus (most parts of Europe) and of all the places he visited with his the “fanclub” (and my faithful mother).

I attached the binding with my preferred triple zig zag stitch and squeezed in my nametag:

Papas Quilt Binding and tag

The backing is made of the same fabric as the background of the top – and the same as I used for my mother’s quilt. So when they are folded up they look identically.

All that applique-ing and marking and quilting took very long but it was easy to persevere as I was sure I had chosen the right gift and was looking forward to his joy in receiving it.

However, I didn’t finish it in time for his 60th birthday, I was 3 days late. But as his party was sadly cancelled due to the severe and high-feverish influenza he had caught, nobody noticed. When they returned from their holidays, I drove over with the kids and I gave him his quilt. And I’m happy to report that he really liked it and stated that he’d probably never get a better gift than this quilt.

The end (o:
Happy Quilting everyone!

Gift revelation

Some weeks ago I have shown you this quilted panel but could not reveal the completed project.

Handschuh für Brigitte Patchwork panel

Infact, I made two of them:

Handschuh für Brigitte wip 1

Here they are cut to shape… No more clues needed, I guess (o;

And this is the finished gift: A BBQ Glove for my friend Brigitte made from some scraps and a mini charm pack of COMMA and bound in a dark grey cotton print.

Handschuh für Brigitte

This is the end of my non-official COMMA series – I promise to turn to other projects for some weeks. But I will get back to this fabric line sooner or later – it is my absolute favourite and I can’t wait to get my hand on larger pieces (o:

Hoping to get back to you soon,
all theses christmassy preperations just beat me up…

birthday preps (2) and a review

It is over.
And he was/ is happy.
And his friends were happy.
And I’m exhausted.
And happy.

Yesterday: More preparations
We made “Pirate’s Blood” (red and green jelly/jello):

And today it was gone within 2 minutes - before I even thought about taking some photos.
We made cupcakes with chocolate and m&m’s:

It took him so long to sort the m&m’s by colour and make up a new design for each cupcake (his choice, not mine!) that the chocolate was dry before he finished the second one (o;

Today: The pirates party in honour of a 5th birthday (o:
It was a nice day and we had so much fun. Almost no tears, no fights and no accidents. Quite exraordinary with 8 little ones between 3 and 5!
The kids had fun with soap bubbles…

… and our special scavenger hunt for “Pirates of the Woods”. They were to collect ordinary items from the woods nearby. I used copied an idea that I found online some months ago (but when I searched for it I couldn’t find it just now). I chose 10 different items from the woods, took a photo, printed it and glued it to egg boxes.

DSC_0377

We set out for a walk in the woods and it started raining before we reached the outskirts. Aaaah! But the kids were well prepared and eager to get their boxes stuffed. It was a great success and everyone was rewarded with some shots of “Pirate’s Blood” and a “Pirate’s Drawstring Bag” with toys and sweets.

DSC_0325

However, when they were all gone, we discovered there HAD been a little accident along the way (o: Our youngest thought it the worst thing that he had to take a shower immediately because we didn’t want to cut off his hair…

DSC_0411

It was a day that was by far better than I had feared and anticipated but I’m glad it’s over nontheless. A huge thank you to our dear neighbor who helped with the kids and to my husband who did all the cleaning and was preparing dinner while we were off for the scavenger hunt.

Any suggestions for next year? Do you have some great-success examples to share?
Finally back to sewing tomorrow!

Birthday preps (1)

Our eldest son turns 5 the day after tomorrow and there’s quite some excitement in the air over here. Since around easter he repeatedly asked when it would finally be his birthday. He could hardly endure his brother’s birthday 5 weeks ago and shed many tears of disappointment when little bro opened his presents.

He “wrote” his invitations last weekend and handed them out last monday. Since then he is counting down and first thing in the morning he tells me how often he will have to go to sleep until his birthday. Beams and giggles and laughter. Love his excitement and cheerful anticipation (o:

His party theme is “Pirates” and when I decided he wasn’t too old for a birthday crown, I quickly chose this pirates print from my stash. It took about one hour to plan, draw, cut, fuse and sew the crown and I think he will like it.

Geburtstagskrone

I used an interfacing I usually use for bags and it turned out quite sturdy.
Then I added some velcro so it fits his head perfectly

Geburtstagskrone verschluss

I’m happy with how it turned out eventually and will make some more to give away as birthday presents (added to that already too long to-sew list). I guess without the planning it might be done in 45 minutes or less.

Birthday preparations continue tomorrow – I might show you more if I’m not too exhausted by tomorrow evening (o:

Have a nice start into october!

Gift for a giant

Today I'm going to share a summer sewing project, a "sewing for guys" project, and a gift idea. Three in one.

Some weeks ago our friend turned 30 and received a barbecue grill from his girlfriend. He said kind of jokingly that he still needed an apron for the next BBQ. So I took his measurements as I was not able to just copy my apron - Did I mention he is 2,06 metres tall?!

His birthday party was yesterday evening so guess what we gave him as his gift...

Yep. A special BBQ Starter Kit

... including giant BBQ gloves...

... and the giant apron!

You can't see the proportions in this photo but when I wear it, the hem is halfway down my calves...

As he is a fan of soccer, I was quite happy to find the footie-fabric in my local fabric store :o)

If I can convince him, I'll get you a photo of the "giant-with-apron-in-action" next time we're over for a BBQ Evening.

Happy Sewing!
