It’s been such a long time! Don’t get me wrong: I haven’t been quilting much lately, infact I haven’t been sewing much at all (my mojo went missing). But FINISHING a quilt that’s something that has not happened here for a very loooooong time…</p> <p>All that was needed to get me going was another baby to be born. Not mine. But my friends’. And another one (from my sister). And another one (from my colleague at work). So even if I finished ONE quilt now, I am already late for the other two… (stay tuned for more though, I am on a roll recently…)</p> <p>And now, without much further ado, here is the baby quilt that I made for my friend’s second son:</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tbJUmb0gb1k/WfD_q65WH5I/AAAAAAAAEko/iYgKhCPEozopVfA_Yekq9z03dhgkRMgLwCHMYCw/s1600-h/Quilt%2BVincent%2BKopie%255B8%255D"><img title="Quilt Vincent Kopie" style="display: inline" alt="Quilt Vincent Kopie" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6tcCF8Ycrvk/WfD_tNe3TbI/AAAAAAAAEks/K7G__6qFUQwlq-OA4v_Fcb20YDZaP-_FwCHMYCw/Quilt%2BVincent%2BKopie_thumb%255B5%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="738"></a></p> <p>In the upper left, the hexagons are still regular. They start to fall apart in the lower left part and are completely defractured in right half. Things can be pretty in life even if they are irregular. Harmony can be found in the oddest shapes, forms and places.</p> <p>I combined low volume fabrics with vibrant boy-ish prints in blue, turquoise, grey, and different shades of green.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-f0qNtGmtI3U/WfD_uNfh2GI/AAAAAAAAEkw/Jiznd25vOP4PRGm7Z7ocQhtOn-wTJGJIQCHMYCw/s1600-h/Detail%2Bof%2Bquilting%2B2%255B5%255D"><img title="Detail of quilting 2" style="display: inline" alt="Detail of quilting 2" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_M2xXS8wSyM/WfD_vb8WnjI/AAAAAAAAEk0/Wb78Ht3F4UEYpqTBANQtRZv7JLLhm6_eACHMYCw/Detail%2Bof%2Bquilting%2B2_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I decided to keep the quilting simple: I used the stitch-in-the-ditch method and only quilted within the main (block) seams.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--YzTbBdrNfo/WfD_wZgnWEI/AAAAAAAAEk4/2l2H4EkArUoaLsWVALtljb8vfNGBOyYggCHMYCw/s1600-h/Detail%2Bof%2Bquilting%255B5%255D"><img title="Detail of quilting" style="display: inline" alt="Detail of quilting" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z9S4KlIHmEo/WfD_xZ8ZZ5I/AAAAAAAAEk8/rDAnxzv8Q60SKiSGqO8dZNgxgmAqo09aQCHMYCw/Detail%2Bof%2Bquilting_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I used a white backing with little blue pluses and a scrappy binding from leftover low volume strips.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9QmifHPfWkc/WfD_ycB_UmI/AAAAAAAAElA/Zax4yWOt_rAZS5m2_SzdeptZIfXpFlEtgCHMYCw/s1600-h/Binding%2Band%2Bbacking%255B5%255D"><img title="Binding and backing" style="display: inline" alt="Binding and backing" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TbRBVGpsq0M/WfD_zbcem6I/AAAAAAAAElE/0r3-owQ4ajg6d2cZekjKrGBJ3H_wbwAKQCHMYCw/Binding%2Band%2Bbacking_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>No baby quilt leaves this house without the baby’s name on it! Although I am not a huge fan of serifs, I instantly fell in love with this font. I admit that I hated those tiny serifs even more when tacking them down with my sewing machine. I used a broad zig zag stitch for this raw-edge appliqué.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dep1cslf2JE/WfD_1D9MufI/AAAAAAAAElI/0Ys_ubME66YtZ_oK_On8x6W2OqbjIgoCQCHMYCw/s1600-h/Name%2Bapplique%255B5%255D"><img title="Name applique" style="display: inline" alt="Name applique" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Tuysia57p9M/WfD_2hd4E9I/AAAAAAAAElM/KibD4tDi0wkpbg6BXnrYwund59sgAM3kwCHMYCw/Name%2Bapplique_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>One last photo and I am off to visit the newborn!</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Yfpn058eEY4/WfD_3k2LvRI/AAAAAAAAElQ/BQzpe9paSb0tYHG8zw_GTzqe4RD7LV9fwCHMYCw/s1600-h/Photo%2Bof%2Bphoto%255B5%255D"><img title="Photo of photo" style="display: inline" alt="Photo of photo" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XCfyDZBo9Os/WfD_4omd_TI/AAAAAAAAElU/6nAAN7C8N14sMnrSd33HPhp97GUppMTPgCHMYCw/Photo%2Bof%2Bphoto_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="480"></a></p> <p>May there be many more babies to come (or I will never finish my WIPs).</p> <p>Do you sometimes need some extra motivation? I really enjoyed reading about your approach to quilt design vs. using a pattern. I think it is funny that most of us use a pattern but give it a personal touch by altering it on the go. Somehow we all like to put our heart and our personality into our quilts.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-15SgDXYAbOg/WS8blSc6TWI/AAAAAAAAEkE/Cexaxp00v5gUqP1Qr4iznwdkkp3agDI4gCHM/s1600-h/giveaway%255B5%255D"><img title="giveaway" style="display: inline" alt="giveaway" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uyTG4FWgJTk/WS8bmK20-TI/AAAAAAAAEkI/tyon9wa1E78esBK-rljBOfci3irTNdrvQCHM/giveaway_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="480" height="480"></a></p> <p>Now without further ado, here is the random winner of Brigitte’s book and of my mini quilt/ pillow cover;</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uGiMzJSuF0A/WS8bmt3G_xI/AAAAAAAAEkM/qBg_zq8ATY8DGEdVGyrPRmh_HqCxppj8gCHM/s1600-h/image%255B5%255D"><img title="image" style="display: inline" alt="image" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cPXwEFa0BYI/WS8bnfPyT4I/AAAAAAAAEkQ/NL3zxDm8XOc-Upqf6gWBUAmrna32eKN7wCHM/image_thumb%255B3%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="126"></a></p> <p>Congratulations, <a href="http://hugsfromhelen.blogspot.de/" target="_blank">Helen</a>! She begins by questioning if you ever bought fabric that you loved when it was on display at your LQS but at home you realise that it looks less appealing and strangely out of place?! Yes. Me. Guilty.</p> <p>She then shows how to design quilts that match your living space: your flat, your house, your mobile home. She starts from a photograph of a room and deducts shapes and colours from it.</p> <p><u>the challenge</u><br>When she wrote the book, several members of our Modern Quilt Guild Bielefeld, helped her sewing the quilt tops (yes, me too). Brigitte threw a party when she received the first copies of the book and we had a blast sketching quilt designs based on random photographs that evening. We decided to carry it a bit further and to make a little MQGB challenge – just for fun. Brigitte chose a picture and we were to make a matching quilt, mini quilt, table runner, wall hanging, etc. based on it.</p> <p><a title="Houseology Interiors, flickr" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/145464578@N08/28184006850/in/dateposted" target="_blank"><img title="Houseology Interiors, flickr" style="display: inline" alt="Houseology Interiors, flickr" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qBFAdNoeQxQ/WR1aVSurY1I/AAAAAAAAEiE/HLmzQ5s9LVE6syTQN9fwdwXeSS-xTs0CgCHM/PastedGraphic-2%255B8%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a><br>photo by Houseology Interiors, flickr</p> <p><u>fabrics and colours</u><br>In her book Brigitte shows different ways to deduct colours from a photo. I tried <a title="Moda’s Palette Builder" href="http://blog.modafabrics.com/palette-builder/" target="_blank">Moda’s Palette Builder</a>: but seeing that I was on a short timeline (no time for ordering and waiting for shipping of chosen fabrics) I pulled solid fabrics from my stash instead:</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7EUdXPkGkR8/WR1aV2XsqiI/AAAAAAAAEiI/K1aS-aHDtQcs7rtRdiylehZ6LnpkLMTVQCHM/s1600-h/IMG_0621%255B5%255D"><img title="IMG_0621" style="display: inline" alt="IMG_0621" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-grWMHRY5xWQ/WR1aWkOMmkI/AAAAAAAAEiM/h3fVjrqzddo3W_Y3bMkTi1wUZPpbZvl4ACHM/IMG_0621_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="480"></a></p> <p><u>design<br></u>Next up was shapes and design. I liked the shapes of the lampshades but as there is similar quilt in Brigitte’s book I thought it might be too simple to just copy her quilt. I still wonder how it happend that I chose the wall clock instead.</p> <p>Here’s a close up of the clock:</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-koBZHyMvCXo/WR1aXssWkBI/AAAAAAAAEiQ/xg1c0oXgjc0ouiMEGCntJFRJcqxnpDCwQCHM/s1600-h/wall%2Bclock%255B4%255D"><img title="wall clock" style="display: inline" alt="wall clock" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-788bfZIYkd4/WR1aYThosRI/AAAAAAAAEiU/eiDPX0aGKVo1lJDwOLFnn-brr8OlPIFtgCHM/wall%2Bclock_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="426"></a></p> <p>And these were my first thougts for a possible design:</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tBgxmqwrAaU/WR1aZM8qSzI/AAAAAAAAEiY/Y3GldHHCVhImxLM8iGFZ_Jrey2pbYs8zQCHM/s1600-h/IMG_0719%255B5%255D"><img title="IMG_0719" style="display: inline" alt="IMG_0719" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vmQk_ECaT9A/WR1aZ3-hJ3I/AAAAAAAAEic/GNo4WYe2UmEkKjSiRVrvNV5zwYaL4GJbwCHM/IMG_0719_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="480"></a></p> <p>I never made a dresden plate before so this was entirely new to me. I thought of differnt sizes for the wedges and of using negative space between them. </p> <p><u>work in progress</u><br>I found a tutorial “how to make your own dresden plate template” <a href="http://www.patchworkposse.com/make-dresden-plate-template/" target="_blank">here</a> and just followed the instructions. Easy peasy. I can recommend this tutorial, if you ever want to make dresden plate templates in your exact size.</p> <p>Once done with sewing the wedges together (I skipped the wonky idea and made a “traditional” dresden plate), I wondered how to achieve that translucent look of the wall clock. I opted for a second layer, more fragile and quite thin. I made another template and drew the design directy onto the paper side of a fusible web.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vRszCFXtJ8M/WR1aagwlroI/AAAAAAAAEig/GYtf5ApegaoID0bMc6JKqCedEr9e5F6ywCHM/s1600-h/IMG_0625%255B6%255D"><img title="IMG_0625" style="display: inline" alt="IMG_0625" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JrDhBXzeVdo/WR1abKJcGLI/AAAAAAAAEik/Edns7A-UwPgHULnyGisC3H4X57QTrRAUgCHM/IMG_0625_thumb%255B3%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="640"></a></p> <p>The next step was tedious. I ironed the fusible web onto a light grey fabric and had to cut out all the shapes with an exacto-knife.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B8x4S2t5ztc/WR1ab5ayFoI/AAAAAAAAEio/H1DK4ACAoHs4eBAnGIkntdcFmUhd3JtDwCHM/s1600-h/IMG_0628%255B5%255D"><img title="IMG_0628" style="display: inline" alt="IMG_0628" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_fWXU39B0R4/WR1acWZTCgI/AAAAAAAAEis/Jet4XlHh7YcSFyReHLvz4wJqTdYds8gVgCHM/IMG_0628_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="480"></a></p> <p>The dresden plate was ironed onto the background fabric and the second layer was ironed onto the dresden plate:</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KH4eoEjc7nU/WR1ad4Yi05I/AAAAAAAAEiw/YK9qOlBSsyQ88_GkeDFecwKStGWhzbDpwCHM/s1600-h/IMG_0644%255B5%255D"><img title="IMG_0644" style="display: inline" alt="IMG_0644" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Cj0poj9HaWs/WR1aeut9vCI/AAAAAAAAEi0/uido31dl8DM0A3mLfWQmk2JMkr92u2ynwCHM/IMG_0644_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" width="640" height="480"></a></p> <p>I appliquéd the second layer with my sewing machine, using a wide and dense zig zag stitch in a similar light grey aurifil thread. If you look at the <a href="http://grapes-hearts.blogspot.de/p/my-finished-quilts.html" target="_blank">quilts I made</a> during the last years you will discover that I rarely follow quilt patterns. I love to make up my own designs. This book helps me to get better at choosing fabrics and designs matching the surroundings/ person the quilt is intended for. When I plan to sew a quilt for my sister next, I’ll snap a photo of her home first. Of course I know her living room, but do I really remember the hues of green she used for decorations? No. And I might not have noticed the unique shape of that armchair leg that I could use as a shape in my quilt design.</p> <p>So if YOU like to design your own quilts, this book is for you. And if YOU have always be terrified by the thought of designing your own quilt, this book is for you, too! I takes you step by step through the design process and includes 12 patterns, deducted from 12 different photos of 12 living spaces.</p> <p>If you’d like your own book, Brigitte offers signed copies <a href="https://www.brigitteheitland.de/book/" target="_blank">here</a>. </p> <p><u>giveaway</u><br>As a bonus for those who read through this lengthy post, I will give away one copy of “Zen Chic Inspired” AND the mini quilt I made. Just leave me a comment below, telling me if you prefer to design your own quilts or if you rather follow quilt patterns (there are so many lovely ones out there!).</p> <p>This giveaway is open until midnight, May 29th, CEST. I will draw a random winner on May 30th.</p> <p>Happy sewing everyone!<br>Christine</p> <p>P.S. If you’d like to see who else participated in the challenge and what they designed for the same room, click <a href="http://farbstoff-bridge.blogspot.de/2017/05/why-zen-chic-inspired-will-make-you.html" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://farbstoff-bridge.blogspot.de/2017/05/why-zen-chic-inspired-will-make-you_15.html" target="_blank">here</a>.</p> <p>P.P.S. I made it years ago and was never able to let it go (aka give it away). But I finally found a home for it – my sister’s third baby received it for his christening. <p>I had to go back to fix it before wrapping and gifting, though. Back then I chose a zigzag stitch that was too narrow for the raw-edge appliqué. So the fabric began to fray after the first wash. Duh. <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FV9z3ZeM4ZA/WGV-ydBKyrI/AAAAAAAAEfQ/L6oybGYSsr0/s1600-h/Fraying_thumb%25255B2%25255D%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="Fraying_thumb[2]" style="display: inline" alt="Fraying_thumb[2]" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MD0tAlUpeRA/WGV-z3bHbJI/AAAAAAAAEfU/ftvJmrJ2oZE/Fraying_thumb%25255B2%25255D_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a> <p>So I added another MUCH wider zigzag stitch to stop the fraying… <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-el2sOPP5ub0/WGV-0j57sjI/AAAAAAAAEfY/GuWFMJ31ZMk/s1600-h/Detail%252520of%252520quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Detail of quilting_thumb[2]" style="display: inline" alt="Detail of quilting_thumb[2]" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WY44qjERk28/WGV-1Q8D3dI/AAAAAAAAEfc/ahWS_l2dsX0/Detail%252520of%252520quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a> <p>… and I added the little boys name, too. Thankfully my sister and my BIL chose another short name – very sewist-friendly (o; <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uwy6AB-Z5IQ/WGV-2H8XvhI/AAAAAAAAEfg/O5TbJzb6C0U/s1600-h/Letters_thumb%25255B2%25255D%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Letters_thumb[2]" style="display: inline" alt="Letters_thumb[2]" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-21ZfECWTd_w/WGV-2-mhyCI/AAAAAAAAEfk/L76tG2FlPpg/Letters_thumb%25255B2%25255D_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a> <p>Here’s a full view of the fixed version. One hardly recognizes the added stitches from a distance, does one? <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pEaUjTd--sE/WGV-3x-URJI/AAAAAAAAEfo/EvfhBQcVJ7c/s1600-h/Theos%252520Quilt_thumb%25255B9%25255D%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="Theos Quilt_thumb[9]" style="display: inline" alt="Theos Quilt_thumb[9]" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qMxFL76QIjo/WGV-4x4C1UI/AAAAAAAAEfs/nwp1Su3bj6I/Theos%252520Quilt_thumb%25255B9%25255D_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="585" height="768"></a> <p>I am happy I was finally able to let it go. I used neon green thread to add some fresh accents and as I forgot the handles initially (duh...), I used some neon green zippers as a last minute fix. I covered the multiple-stitched ends under some scraps of SnapPap (aka "Vegan Leather", washable and sew-able thick paper).</div>

<br />
I had a treasured Cotton & Steel charm pack and I wanted to make a baby
girl quilt for my sister’s second child – due in April.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV-job506fazOsWRj_HSNMyo9faokgR4AkaDk2zRfesusjLtr8-ZmD5yrpwVXjD6gvISGlwd0vQPVfabQI1ND7NVeTtZPlxF9wZfzdVLiDUVf325TTknZV3PJA_EThxhtQeV2FnUv_Bohs/s1600/Layout2neu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV-job506fazOsWRj_HSNMyo9faokgR4AkaDk2zRfesusjLtr8-ZmD5yrpwVXjD6gvISGlwd0vQPVfabQI1ND7NVeTtZPlxF9wZfzdVLiDUVf325TTknZV3PJA_EThxhtQeV2FnUv_Bohs/s640/Layout2neu.jpg" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I auditioned different layouts and decided on the one that formes little
stars on the negative space – which instantly prompted the quilting design.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0FFrhDCcsC0UTsVUOy57vfiNeXz-bzVwpBrbxIFx5VJHlZtdavCqKVaD9ftB23YjiUcWmNoD-D_dS0HTC2mIujidyN_eKlr4V-Yj53h7RWyOMLs4Jxu1rNLWexYQTXK0aUeSwvf9zygva/s1600/Layout1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0FFrhDCcsC0UTsVUOy57vfiNeXz-bzVwpBrbxIFx5VJHlZtdavCqKVaD9ftB23YjiUcWmNoD-D_dS0HTC2mIujidyN_eKlr4V-Yj53h7RWyOMLs4Jxu1rNLWexYQTXK0aUeSwvf9zygva/s640/Layout1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I applied some marks with chalk to keep those quilting lines straight.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRr544VaKizA8nkqjhcRfHzaU2D5QMaGKNSYjz6JirrHB7frhhTA6mp7WR0zukHK_2unqfn3oyYLtGSXAJP-JHjtzut1xqinfSJnbl2NihyphenhyphenmQ8khOy6qevZPapXxXE_Y9qUcKBNp4qXUuj/s1600/Basting+and+marking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRr544VaKizA8nkqjhcRfHzaU2D5QMaGKNSYjz6JirrHB7frhhTA6mp7WR0zukHK_2unqfn3oyYLtGSXAJP-JHjtzut1xqinfSJnbl2NihyphenhyphenmQ8khOy6qevZPapXxXE_Y9qUcKBNp4qXUuj/s640/Basting+and+marking.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I
defined three big and some small stars that I omitted while straight line
quilting and quilted them free-hand afterwards. Each with a unique quilting
design. I used a variegated Aurifil thread in shades of white, light grey and dark grey.<br />

To show you the free motion quilting, I used directional and natural lighting
instead of artificial light. The fabric I used for the Background is "Notes in silver on white" from Zen Chic's Modern Backgrounds.<br />

I had a hard time giving it away as I really enjoyed the free-motion quilting a lot but I am sure it will be put to good use at my sister's home.<br />

Another quilt finish inspired by modern art. A homage to <a href="https://www.gerhard-richter.com/en/" target="_blank">Gerhard Richter</a>. </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The german artist (pictured above during a vernissage at Tate Modern in 2011) is considered one of the greatest artist of our time. In the 1960 and 1970 he explored abstraction using <a href="https://www.gerhard-richter.com/en/art/microsites/4900-colours" target="_blank">colour charts</a> - arranged in squares or rectangles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loved the idea of colourful squares and when I stumbled across <a href="http://www.remember.de/en/Office-oxid/Stationery/Memolinos/Memolino-Random.html?listtype=search&searchparam=random" target="_blank">this notebook</a>, I decided to make a quilt with the majority of squares in neutral colours - grey, white-ish and black.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make things as quick and easy as possible, I used Kona Cotton Charm Packs and tried to cluster them by colours, only seperated by neutrals. So that most green hues would be close together and so on...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the first time ever, I used a wavy stitch of my sewing machine and a walking foot. Light grey variegated Aurifil makes for a nice contrast.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used <a href="http://blog.modafabrics.com/team/zen-chic/" target="_blank">Brigitte aka Zenchic's</a> "Reel Time Screens Ink" fabric for the backing and a scrappy grey and black binding with a triple zig zag stitch to tack it down.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I machine stitched a quilt label and sewed it down by hand, using Aurifil's variegated floss:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_7tOcWysKXjDmZlvVbC0nYKa-WAiuGtAIP-8h1hG6TKpoz129iJ9sq2DKn5vgHV9-ruzNWHqSca4iH2X_WuMmqws9NMngGwTtCgqpC8IQ95AlvpbAO5gg4qcOKsdK1F0ZxLx8EiIap_iP/s1600/Quilt+Label.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_7tOcWysKXjDmZlvVbC0nYKa-WAiuGtAIP-8h1hG6TKpoz129iJ9sq2DKn5vgHV9-ruzNWHqSca4iH2X_WuMmqws9NMngGwTtCgqpC8IQ95AlvpbAO5gg4qcOKsdK1F0ZxLx8EiIap_iP/s640/Quilt+Label.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt is meant to be used daily but I like to imagine it as a wall hanging, too. </div>
Here's a photoshop version of my idea:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijPiaLRPEJ47XbaD_7K6DWolzExvXeN07fTG7QCoXCr7xJh62ADBS830SOhP8jL-pMpyc5xwe1L1s-WtouzpauU3x1zHymIna6Gn5lGrYeteWE1RVoGnvvCED3S_1DzgpO5KHhyphenhyphen__kHzTy/s1600/Fotomontage_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijPiaLRPEJ47XbaD_7K6DWolzExvXeN07fTG7QCoXCr7xJh62ADBS830SOhP8jL-pMpyc5xwe1L1s-WtouzpauU3x1zHymIna6Gn5lGrYeteWE1RVoGnvvCED3S_1DzgpO5KHhyphenhyphen__kHzTy/s640/Fotomontage_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt was gifted to someone special who could do with a cheer-up recently.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I might be tempted to add, that this is one of my favourite quilt finishes ever.</div>
Thank you, Mr. Richter and Remember.de for your inspiration.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy quilting everyone!</div>

Here's the second quilt I made for the boys: another strip quilt, this time with 60° triangles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFgtce6LXiW77XV5T340f20jyjKunrQLXJ843dPR_YZ5QOW9e9UzJPlJckh4Ak4oKzft4tE9InSj2vDy5TfzxZM6JdVMngruEsHV1sKVErJ4AUMwDxZevYRC4WlFnM0NZkpovr1lzL_wg8/s1600/cutting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFgtce6LXiW77XV5T340f20jyjKunrQLXJ843dPR_YZ5QOW9e9UzJPlJckh4Ak4oKzft4tE9InSj2vDy5TfzxZM6JdVMngruEsHV1sKVErJ4AUMwDxZevYRC4WlFnM0NZkpovr1lzL_wg8/s640/cutting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I had all those triangles cut and sorted, I pondered about the layout. On the left you can see monochromatic spiderwebs, on the right I layed out multichromatic spiderwebs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt-Cfj9I-47HJX0rdIb0tKBEouZqN5Tk4zhpmCbcQEYnNIx4GtABfgFbtaJU5POf57ZUgGgENZ9SqBzV02WZDGIYAsLJbKyzZ7_dXo7mJM_Udkf1kM4SOrcq4JP0KVuO4ZY-sMAR9wysbL/s1600/mosaica7f40ad23a754a124d9d3ca9fb2701056ac544ba+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt-Cfj9I-47HJX0rdIb0tKBEouZqN5Tk4zhpmCbcQEYnNIx4GtABfgFbtaJU5POf57ZUgGgENZ9SqBzV02WZDGIYAsLJbKyzZ7_dXo7mJM_Udkf1kM4SOrcq4JP0KVuO4ZY-sMAR9wysbL/s640/mosaica7f40ad23a754a124d9d3ca9fb2701056ac544ba+%25282%2529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibrpCjYVS8eJwuZW75w_nGKJ-kzmw0q3JUqLSzZS8GNY11JLFAYekdGHgKyjHe7a4ejZKGfKG3My7aedmB27XU8JUI0ogADzmjR_PE9b3QQNcAdDHn-zYmiXSbCDhVRi28d38_XYoUbSNz/s1600/Jonathan+Binding+and+Applique.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
I liked the multichromatic version better so I started sewing those webs together: I had to use tons of starch to get acceptable results.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHF8fE8cUqe81l3X0u-1EvcyYPwGTnvFNboNnSVlEySES4KNvKIYhsAdUHfwWiRrcbAJPNjMNn3uVHtxfSSsA6vtyS-XgGLzrahH4kfX97DtDhyphenhyphenqv50dPTB2gZfakEXJ4sQ5QIew2lz0zk/s1600/Jonathan+Quilting+Details.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEircKf_K1IXrHb880NUMSWhRacTn4MMGtfGtXYmb8wbHz2_s1NHnwYpwcEVTtfAqGhzJVDQIwmItGeriMZyikqFT7mSlqLxXLvQS1Z3pJOPx49w3THkR7eg4y0VEfuaN1fz8Dn_Qt6IF1Qs/s1600/points+meeting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEircKf_K1IXrHb880NUMSWhRacTn4MMGtfGtXYmb8wbHz2_s1NHnwYpwcEVTtfAqGhzJVDQIwmItGeriMZyikqFT7mSlqLxXLvQS1Z3pJOPx49w3THkR7eg4y0VEfuaN1fz8Dn_Qt6IF1Qs/s640/points+meeting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like the first quilt I made for the boys, I only quilted within the white strips. This time choosing a single, simple quilt design, because I thought things were already varied enough. So, simple steep loops, many "l"s was all I quilted in light grey Aurifil thread throughout those light parts of the spiderwebs:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4hJY8y61GOG75qQIsKV02_x8R1ORUszKkP-8xAvYSmS30szBd4OgtWxhMpycvq94WzeS_s8cThfSOO2X3WOyoII_z4I8YRFtFIE7HIzJeG28F4Tfk9kfkfgJrzvWUblEjPeLAe5Rs0aZz/s1600/while+quilting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4hJY8y61GOG75qQIsKV02_x8R1ORUszKkP-8xAvYSmS30szBd4OgtWxhMpycvq94WzeS_s8cThfSOO2X3WOyoII_z4I8YRFtFIE7HIzJeG28F4Tfk9kfkfgJrzvWUblEjPeLAe5Rs0aZz/s640/while+quilting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The backing is the same on both quilts: black pindots on white. I used the same fabric for the binding.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a close-up shot of the quilting:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And this is the quilt in it's entirety:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I hope that these two quilts will be loved by the boys, now while they are still small and also later when they grow up. I chose those contemporary colours and prints so they can still use them when they are teens or twens or "really old" (o;</div>

When our friends moved away, I made quilts for their boys as a special memory to take with them, to remember us from time to time. The boys used to share one bedroom so I wanted to make similar quilts, matching in colour but not strictly in design.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwqT-_8AjS8METSSW6CpA_LeQJcxBjIp7qD9_YlRzdASTLEBucuAo8zkjYW0h7yEzbVfoQo-1wqXS2eEr_ZGtFP3P14OqoH-E17hMCUARBAvSo85IezqyreQ1FjZj2ojMD7sTXVemNjXWZ/s1600/piecing+strips.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwqT-_8AjS8METSSW6CpA_LeQJcxBjIp7qD9_YlRzdASTLEBucuAo8zkjYW0h7yEzbVfoQo-1wqXS2eEr_ZGtFP3P14OqoH-E17hMCUARBAvSo85IezqyreQ1FjZj2ojMD7sTXVemNjXWZ/s640/piecing+strips.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I chose low volume grey and white-ish prints and accent fabrics in blue, green, dark grey and turquoise and started sewing 4 strips together. Out came my 90° ruler and I cut striped triangles from each 4-strip-set.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV08ys02NrlJ70_5L3yEz8ZBIp9_zX_Zq_C_hCKqA8wibjBl9FSefsjOSp5g9P_5XJU8t-pE2yJiGxJPtoP6vbN7HxM_wx26t7HNg3gi19HFWijhBpdlnDJfIalV47BxfsyZZMky93pg_m/s1600/cutting+triangles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV08ys02NrlJ70_5L3yEz8ZBIp9_zX_Zq_C_hCKqA8wibjBl9FSefsjOSp5g9P_5XJU8t-pE2yJiGxJPtoP6vbN7HxM_wx26t7HNg3gi19HFWijhBpdlnDJfIalV47BxfsyZZMky93pg_m/s640/cutting+triangles.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then the <strike>fun</strike> pain of trying out different layouts began... I opted for a giant arrow, diagonal rows, chevrons and diamonds. Which one do you like best?!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I decided on the design (Diamonds, because it matched my choise for his brother's quilt best), I started sewing the blocks together. Trying to match those points and cursing when the bulky seams made things difficult...</div>

So it was high time for a new project! I made a baby quilt that can be stuffed with a giant pillow form (80 x 80 cm). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAgAQ6MIp2w76ERI_XLH0uvV7mQbw6apmJPUNUrXLYSFa1Ve9TbMeEZrbyDPyPJJax5E8NwGenuNiQGTtwgpyEpGQjfUigqxwj8Jw6BNSiDfozyZk7xFq3FYOXgm3hWPDWxLXzK-POdbb-/s1600/Leas+Quilted+Pillowcover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAgAQ6MIp2w76ERI_XLH0uvV7mQbw6apmJPUNUrXLYSFa1Ve9TbMeEZrbyDPyPJJax5E8NwGenuNiQGTtwgpyEpGQjfUigqxwj8Jw6BNSiDfozyZk7xFq3FYOXgm3hWPDWxLXzK-POdbb-/s640/Leas+Quilted+Pillowcover.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The pillowcover can make for a light blanket (unstuffed for warm weather) or a “baby duvet cover” (aka stuffed with a giant pillow) for cold days – while the baby is still small.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm15yrknI79CHFTAeF5Pb2SQk0sOTCZKbRKEVtij79xQYxo8fCpErCPEAjOHYPe_cAj5K55grG4l9lXUBvGHlrIGxGuqvHLsE3JjV0gP9s4o-1TUq95PSbPyIjGv81Ruj-5OSzXSro8GOr/s1600/Zipper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm15yrknI79CHFTAeF5Pb2SQk0sOTCZKbRKEVtij79xQYxo8fCpErCPEAjOHYPe_cAj5K55grG4l9lXUBvGHlrIGxGuqvHLsE3JjV0gP9s4o-1TUq95PSbPyIjGv81Ruj-5OSzXSro8GOr/s640/Zipper.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When she gets older, she can still use it as a pillow cover. I chose colours and prints that are not too baby-ish, so she might still like it when she’s grown up. (BTW: fabrics are “Just my type” by Patty Young)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I quilted it with variegated yellow Aurifil thread in on of my favourite FMQ designs. I really like the combination of squares and dogwood quilting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here’s a close-up of the zipper, that I partly hid within the binding. <br />Ha, did you realize I chose to use SASHING for the first time in ages?! It must have been 3 years that I last opted for sashing (or so it seems…)<br />

My friend Verena and I, we made him a gift inspired by <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/22733287@N07/8862551132/" target="_blank">this pillow.</a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4NO8kzL7jJ0/VhECnF7PkzI/AAAAAAAAEPA/PqA3eT1RIIg/s1600-h/Henriks-Quilt-Kopie6.jpg"><img title="Henriks Quilt Kopie" style="display: inline" alt="Henriks Quilt Kopie" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YNOQMEkYv6U/VhECoTnaQkI/AAAAAAAAEPI/m-KHFAUUq0A/Henriks-Quilt-Kopie_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="861"></a></p> <p>We chose lots of black & white prints (many from ZenChic’s new line Modern Backgrounds “Paper”) and some blue, turquoise, green and yellow scraps. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GDBFccKbv4Q/VhECpbvbsLI/AAAAAAAAEPQ/jMPovmvxS88/s1600-h/Detail19.jpg"><img title="Detail1" style="display: inline" alt="Detail1" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yq1GRRkLoTQ/VhECqJp2RPI/AAAAAAAAEPY/0lJwNZ8Aqo4/Detail1_thumb6.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>We used raw-edge-appliqué to “write” his name on the back:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zxsVE-wgdzc/VhECq4ttTyI/AAAAAAAAEPc/khutw_KE9Lk/s1600-h/Detail%252520letter%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="Detail letter" style="display: inline" alt="Detail letter" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WvpRhzZci_I/VhECrqYUueI/AAAAAAAAEPo/8Hb9C8swakc/Detail%252520letter_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="640"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6_q6z7OzAyU/VhECsp_qZnI/AAAAAAAAEPw/KLF_iYiLXYI/s1600-h/Detail35.jpg"><img title="Detail3" style="display: inline" alt="Detail3" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uO0Nne_UxUE/VhECteK8m6I/AAAAAAAAEP4/3U_8qFmGZf8/Detail3_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>Here are some of my favourite blocks: some crowns…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nxrV7FJehHI/VhECuYfpLVI/AAAAAAAAEQA/Xgr1K-LSgAw/s1600-h/Detail75.jpg"><img title="Detail7" style="display: inline" alt="Detail7" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K4yMExh-ixY/VhECvV5GltI/AAAAAAAAEQI/XU5fujJznAg/Detail7_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>… newspaper advertising…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CeefzLTnsS0/VhECwIcPN0I/AAAAAAAAEQQ/b4yQdrZbVkc/s1600-h/Detail25.jpg"><img title="Detail2" style="display: inline" alt="Detail2" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XxSKxREh2cw/VhECw1eqp5I/AAAAAAAAEQY/_nW7EB6K4FA/Detail2_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>…crossword puzzles…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-brWL8xUpG68/VhECxk3SLBI/AAAAAAAAEQg/R0ZZYcOL_qc/s1600-h/Detail85.jpg"><img title="Detail8" style="display: inline" alt="Detail8" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UWIQgKew9wQ/VhECyYHBofI/AAAAAAAAEQo/seLVH1ejA1k/Detail8_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>…and some funky glasses…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vAJgarpZFMY/VhECzII-jcI/AAAAAAAAEQw/adk-GcpUp5U/s1600-h/Detail95.jpg"><img title="Detail9" style="display: inline" alt="Detail9" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B0k2LYMR7iI/VhECz-7cpII/AAAAAAAAEQ4/AqcJ2RfAfGk/Detail9_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I only stitched in the ditch of those inner seams, which makes a nice pattern on that flannel star-y backing:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C13l5QCPwOs/VhEC09pJQ7I/AAAAAAAAERA/bvJoWRdp9qo/s1600-h/Detail45.jpg"><img title="Detail4" style="display: inline" alt="Detail4" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ykO1I_KVZTI/VhEC10hN19I/AAAAAAAAERI/HU2X_eD6OZ8/Detail4_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p>We used left overs from the top for a scrappy binding. So I made another sugar cone from fabric. He asked for a “soccer” version, which was rather difficult to make.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p0xZEtQvuE8/VhA2UMuRDxI/AAAAAAAAEJA/fZ-4K3Aks78/s1600-h/cone%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="cone" style="display: inline" alt="cone" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Bu8gmST1Nfc/VhA2VF-uftI/AAAAAAAAEJI/kqv8H0Sv-Co/cone_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I really dislike most of the soccer themed fabric out there. So I made a border from this knit fabric:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Bys-vN68W_M/VhA2V4vGunI/AAAAAAAAEJQ/zyfzeFUkNr8/s1600-h/cone%252520construction%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="cone construction" style="display: inline" alt="cone construction" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CDWiVhvFp5w/VhA2WyoT4wI/AAAAAAAAEJY/5ofBGcpZMsg/cone%252520construction_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vBk4zxvn3xI/VhA2Xuk7wQI/AAAAAAAAEJg/wIE4pbyMhi0/s1600-h/cone%252520construction%2525202%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="cone construction 2" style="display: inline" alt="cone construction 2" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a8t5y1cvAVs/VhA2YBHxpZI/AAAAAAAAEJo/Oc3m15vWZNI/cone%252520construction%2525202_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p>I added some black and white “ball” fabric and machine stitched his class, his name and the date of his first day of school. We are heading into our fall break. Little boy is not very excited about school and tends to do his homework with the least effort possible but he seems to get along well enough. I’ll keep my fingers crossed (for the next couple of years, I guess…). Sigh.</p> <p>Are there any “first day of school traditions” in your whereabouts?!</p> <p>Happy sewing everyone!<br>Christine</p> <div class="blogger-post-footer"><div class="linkwithin_div"></div></div>grapes and heartshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01429193712115791817noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1780690398277149652.post-89585342764430421992015-08-16T21:23:00.001+02:002015-08-16T21:23:22.642+02:00Comfy clothes<p>Am I the only one feeling the need of making clothes in summer? Is there perhaps a pre-historic code that tells us to prepare clothes for winter? It seems like each summer I feel the urge to sew clothes for my kids (<a href="http://grapes-hearts.blogspot.de/2013/05/a-jersey-obsession.html" target="_blank">2013</a> and <a href="http://grapes-hearts.blogspot.de/2015/01/bye-bye-2014.html" target="_blank">2014</a>). My quilting mojo has completely vanished 8 weeks ago.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ah7t2jXdqD4/VdDiw2R6pvI/AAAAAAAAEFE/XexuzKMWSMo/s1600-h/clothes%252520on%252520the%252520fence%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="clothes on the fence" style="display: inline" alt="clothes on the fence" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0Oq36j5kd-k/VdDiykljOEI/AAAAAAAAEFM/F2FlaZhwKwU/clothes%252520on%252520the%252520fence_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>It all started with these supercool ninja fabrics that I found in our local fabric shop. The darker one is jersey and the light one is a thick and super soft and cuddly sweater fabric.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aqEza86Z7-0/VdDizk7zXHI/AAAAAAAAEFU/bdbSqpiQ41o/s1600-h/ninja%252520fabric%252520navy%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="ninja fabric navy" style="margin: 0px; display: inline" alt="ninja fabric navy" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OCLzylXnL0w/VdDi0fL6YsI/AAAAAAAAEFc/0vsXLnjCoFI/ninja%252520fabric%252520navy_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="310" height="208"></a> <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Gxf-H2J5_98/VdDi19fqXQI/AAAAAAAAEFk/IYns1W_VUDo/s1600-h/ninja%252520fabric%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="ninja fabric" style="display: inline" alt="ninja fabric" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Oc6UZlCABLU/VdDi2f_EwwI/AAAAAAAAEFs/tRZMVqVoEwA/ninja%252520fabric_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="310" height="208"></a></p> <p>I decided to make two hoodies and two t-shirts for my boys (<a href="https://www.pattydoo.de/schnittmuster/kindershirt-leo" target="_blank">german pattern by pattydoo found here</a> – including how-to videos):</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Og73dJ3q8zY/VdDi3mJ0MPI/AAAAAAAAEF0/4HmgkUiYcYE/s1600-h/ninja%252520shirt%252520and%252520hoodie%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="ninja shirt and hoodie" style="display: inline" alt="ninja shirt and hoodie" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uX6esLpEDfI/VdDi4ocdY7I/AAAAAAAAEF8/hNh20SuhH6A/ninja%252520shirt%252520and%252520hoodie_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I would have added the front pocket to both hoodies but I am forgetful sometimes…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--IH10HNru48/VdDi5dVJ0pI/AAAAAAAAEGE/0cxPP-cO5hI/s1600-h/front%252520pockets%252520hoodie%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="front pockets hoodie" style="display: inline" alt="front pockets hoodie" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A-h6NT5wb2s/VdDi6rO5TjI/AAAAAAAAEGM/ubu_ZGEaXKU/front%252520pockets%252520hoodie_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>Here is little boy, trying some ninja moves in his new sweater:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5dCeoxDUvfE/VdDi7lpoGSI/AAAAAAAAEGU/h8QoK8IjMoA/s1600-h/hoodie%252520in%252520action%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="hoodie in action" style="display: inline" alt="hoodie in action" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xPE1JywePdg/VdDi8tTYh7I/AAAAAAAAEGc/EjJrkUUAYbQ/hoodie%252520in%252520action_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="360" height="480"></a></p> <p>…and big boy wearing his new tee:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--l7clh4lI74/VdDi9gljMCI/AAAAAAAAEGk/xx-ehsmnx6Y/s1600-h/ninja%252520shirt%252520in%252520action%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="ninja shirt in action" style="display: inline" alt="ninja shirt in action" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nlzZdVplKWE/VdDi-RL-fPI/AAAAAAAAEGs/pb3gjFasn9o/ninja%252520shirt%252520in%252520action_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>When big boy fell ill some weeks ago, we discovered that he had outgrown his comfy pants (how can his legs be so long while is waist is still so small?! He needs extra long skinny jeans now). So we went to the local fabric shop and I let him choose the fabric.</p> <p>I ended up making several pairs of comfy pants for him and little bro. Some with waistbands made from knits and others with elastics in “fold-over tunnels”. Some with pockets, most without. Some with hems and others with cuffs.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XsyM4U2T0xQ/VdDi_cCR8GI/AAAAAAAAEG0/VNeJZVcB0bQ/s1600-h/shorts%252520with%252520hem%252520twin%252520needle%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="shorts with hem twin needle" style="display: inline" alt="shorts with hem twin needle" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xsgTPkKBT7M/VdDjANv8p_I/AAAAAAAAEG8/TVAdEeVFo4k/shorts%252520with%252520hem%252520twin%252520needle_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>And this one is my favourite:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wL4-EX5np3o/VdDjBAePzDI/AAAAAAAAEHE/UdwRhhxLNo0/s1600-h/shorts%252520with%252520eyelets%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="shorts with eyelets" style="display: inline" alt="shorts with eyelets" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uoiBimL8SsY/VdDjBxGPX5I/AAAAAAAAEHM/IMlDdXwmV3M/shorts%252520with%252520eyelets_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>It’s a pair of shorts I made from the left-overs. The french-hungarian artist is considered as one of the founders of OpArt. He combined easy geometric shapes like squares, rectangles, triangles and circles to create stunning and eye dazzling optical illusions.</p> <p>One of my favourites is this one.</p> <p><a href="http://www.op-art.co.uk/op-art-gallery/victor-vasarely/riu-kiu-c"><img alt="Riu-Kiu-C" src="http://www.op-art.co.uk/op-art-gallery/var/resizes/victor-vasarely/riu-kiu-c.jpeg?m=1322416008" width="240" height="239"></a></p> <p>Riu-Kiu-C, Victor Vasarely, 1960</p> <p>I always thought that I would love to create a similar piece of art following his style. But somehow other projects (like lots of baby quilts for our friends) always took higher priority.</p> <p>Then, last spring, our <a href="http://www.modernquiltguildbielefeld.com/">Modern Quilt Guild Bielefeld</a> decided to take part in a quilt show and our general topic was “Solids Only”. So I had to create a quilt that is made entirely of solid fabrics. Ha! Enter Riu-Kiu-C.</p> <p>I drew up a pattern using only rectangles and some triangles. Here you can see that pattern when the quilt was almost finished – with lots of handwritten additions:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hF2Cd7GjwjI/VVZOEUKb4jI/AAAAAAAAD-M/6XiNgv-Su1Y/s1600-h/OptArt%252520Quilt%252520Plan%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="OptArt Quilt Plan" style="display: inline" alt="OptArt Quilt Plan" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9hYh05Pnmrk/VVZOFcf1thI/AAAAAAAAD-Y/jDqFUcYDgrE/OptArt%252520Quilt%252520Plan_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>As I wanted a slightly more soft contrast, I decided on a white and grey colour scheme instead of white and black. I am glad I did and I have to say, that the finished quilt is probably one of my favourites ever. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IlsDd-XRMuU/VVZOGdNilBI/AAAAAAAAD-g/exr-PIJMN2g/s1600-h/OptArt%252520Quilt%252520Kopie%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img title="OptArt Quilt Kopie" style="display: inline" alt="OptArt Quilt Kopie" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yOWHcyN8wTs/VVZOHJqI5AI/AAAAAAAAD-o/Rt7rRiy5bFk/OptArt%252520Quilt%252520Kopie_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="350" height="458"></a></p> <p>It just turned out the way that I hoped it would. </p> <p>Piecing was not easy because it had to be very exact and precise. Especially those diagonal seams were a pain. The seam ripper came out more than once…! I have a love-hate relationship with him. Can you relate?!</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OfgDTQXWTtU/VVZOsosWpnI/AAAAAAAAEAI/8ISLLPKT3i4/s1600-h/OptArt%252520Detail%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="OptArt Detail" style="display: inline" alt="OptArt Detail" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9hge6-F2dTw/VVZOtlKoLII/AAAAAAAAEAQ/7Rr4Eew_QJ4/OptArt%252520Detail_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p>I debated with myself for quite a long time because I could’t make up my mind about the quilting design. I usually prefer free motion designs over straight line quilting but this time a simple outline won. I took some white aurifil and outlined every seam – but only on the white strips. The grey fabric remains unquilted. I am glad I did not venture our for a more “artistic” design. It adds a clean and simple look to this modern design.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NIkRsmW8Eog/VVZOJ2iZF8I/AAAAAAAAD_A/GQI9J9kfAw8/s1600-h/OptArt%252520Quilt%252520Detail%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="OptArt Quilt Detail" style="display: inline" alt="OptArt Quilt Detail" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yS4ZS9Y9CQA/VVZOLNgfCSI/AAAAAAAAD_I/Jve-MmN_EUs/OptArt%252520Quilt%252520Detail_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a> <br></p> <p>I initially envisioned it to be a modern wall hanging…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N6lVOju1VG8/VVZOMXqdtkI/AAAAAAAAD_Q/sNEHTqg32AQ/s1600-h/Fotomontage2%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="Fotomontage2" style="display: inline" alt="Fotomontage2" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-trMTqCONAf4/VVZONOFINhI/AAAAAAAAD_Y/tPlRAPjQFm4/Fotomontage2_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="517"></a></p> <p>…but when I was looking for backing fabrics I found a perfect match in a dotted flannel. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WCpX_Gk0JzY/VVZOODxAt4I/AAAAAAAAD_g/pY3Tti6IALY/s1600-h/Opt%252520Art%252520Backing%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="Opt Art Backing" style="display: inline" alt="Opt Art Backing" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RuKr1_AgPkw/VVZOPKIzjnI/AAAAAAAAD_o/Y-bFyylx0s0/Opt%252520Art%252520Backing_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p>Flannel is quite a heavy choice as backing for a wall hanging but it is oh so soft for snuggling. The quilt ended up rather big (1,65m x 2,25m) so I guess the whole family can snuggle up under it. Now to find a new (and smaller) wall hanging for our living room (o:</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cJ3jtu44lKM/VVZOPxInVbI/AAAAAAAAD_w/tfF579s3k54/s1600-h/Opt%252520Art%252520Quilt%252520Backing%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Opt Art Quilt Backing" style="display: inline" alt="Opt Art Quilt Backing" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D-HT5EJVfgY/VVZOQ216URI/AAAAAAAAD_4/81BKgrWrreE/Opt%252520Art%252520Quilt%252520Backing_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I finished the quilt with a single fold binding and zig zag stitch. Lately I prefered the single fold binding over double fold binding as it adds less bulk to the quilt. But I have no experience regarding durability. Do you know whether double fold binding will last considerably longer than single fold?!</p> <p><a title="AmysCreativeSide.com" href="http://amyscreativeside.com"><img style="border-top-style: none; border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-left-style: none" alt="AmysCreativeSide.com" src="http://amyscreativeside.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/spring-2015-BQF-Button-e1429716312925.jpg"></a></p> <p>This is my second entry for Blogger’s Quilt Festival Spring 2015. Please visit Amy and her online festival of fine quilts. There is much to be seen and to discover.</p> <p>If you came over from Blogger’s Quilt Festival, please consider leaving a comment so I can see you were here and repay the visit!</p> <p>Happy Quilting!<br>Christine</p> <p> </p> <p>P.S. Oh, and I even finished the quilt in time for “Quilt Art Nürtingen”, the quilt show it was intended for. There’s nothing like a close finish. You know how things sometimes take longer than planned, don’t you?!</p> <p>I had chosen an easy “squares and triangles” <a href="http://grapes-hearts.blogspot.de/2013/04/squares-and-half-square-triangles-quilt.html" target="_blank">block</a>,</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6rzpZnJHQYg/VVWzZmXnILI/AAAAAAAAD7Q/DfOMqYTmex0/s1600-h/finished%252520block%252520detail%25255B1%25255D%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img title="finished block detail" style="display: inline" alt="finished block detail" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x5SmnO4EgUY/VVWzag3lp9I/AAAAAAAAD7Y/8DNSeS1uubc/finished%252520block%252520detail%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="480" height="480"></a></p> <p>inspired by a winter coat I had bought for my eldest son.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bJw5ypoe-sw/VVWzbea7ajI/AAAAAAAAD7g/Z83Q-8i_3Iw/s1600-h/Patchwork%252520Winterjacke%2525202%25255B1%25255D%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img title="Patchwork Winterjacke 2" style="display: inline" alt="Patchwork Winterjacke 2" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-uTT0SA8N2Bs/VVWzcC0BTtI/AAAAAAAAD7o/fEyBKswamuM/Patchwork%252520Winterjacke%2525202%25255B1%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="468"></a></p> <p>The colours were entirely chosen to match our living room. <br>Here’s the finished quilt. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8fd1PybDJaw/VVWzdAkuGWI/AAAAAAAAD7w/XHX8ZE6S6ik/s1600-h/Bee%252520Quilt%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img title="Bee Quilt" style="display: inline" alt="Bee Quilt" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9iXqPHNWALE/VVWzeSOtReI/AAAAAAAAD74/jqNUj934Kkk/Bee%252520Quilt_thumb%25255B10%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="776"></a></p> <p>I will admit, that it was very difficult to sew those blocks together as the block sizes varied more than I had thought they would. We knew beforehand that our Guild member and my close friend was expecting a boy. So we considered several blocks and colour schemes that suited our plans for a bee quilt for the little man.</p> <p>Not too many matching points (for easier assembly – somehow the quarter inch of seam allowance varies with every person?!) and not too difficult so that even the newbies could join in.</p> <p>We decided on a wonky pinwheel design, using low volume prints for the background and blues, greens and greys for the pinwheels.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-4SqvjUKWPrQ/VM026dk2TyI/AAAAAAAAD2E/PdnRd8-HXNA/s1600-h/MQGB%252520Valentin%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="MQGB Valentin" style="display: inline" alt="MQGB Valentin" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-yy_Tuxa0kzs/VM027UQsG3I/AAAAAAAAD2M/sGIsbTW3EWQ/MQGB%252520Valentin_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="550"></a></p> <p>I volunteered to make the quilt top, baste, quilt and bind it, so I was in charge of the layout, too. This was the first attempt: All blocks arranged, I tried to spread the colours evenly. (Sorry for the bad shot, the blocks are hanging on my design wall, down in the basement –> bad lighting)</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-23NJf6xNcHc/VM029CH3bdI/AAAAAAAAD2U/wZPYnSGmNrs/s1600-h/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520blocks%252520on%252520design%252520wall%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="MQGB Valentin blocks on design wall" style="display: inline" alt="MQGB Valentin blocks on design wall" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-djvOFKknph8/VM02-YMSBlI/AAAAAAAAD2c/AFr7BLJFcqE/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520blocks%252520on%252520design%252520wall_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="736"></a></p> <p>I thought the effect was too chaotic and that the wonky pinwheels were not as clearly visible as I had hoped for. So I made some more blocks and added a border.</p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Ph4EQUH1AeU/VM02_VGuxII/AAAAAAAAD2k/qchZtVhZL64/s1600-h/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520Top%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="MQGB Valentin Top" style="display: inline" alt="MQGB Valentin Top" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--bFnm2rM1dk/VM03AN7p4GI/AAAAAAAAD2s/D5AITVRYqyo/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520Top_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="708"></a> <p>I quilted it with semi-leaves (is there an official name for this quilt design?!) and stitched in the ditch to reach the next pinwheel. That way I could quilt coherrently, without breaking threads for every new pinwheel.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-YFaV_4-xJfI/VM03BC4ik9I/AAAAAAAAD20/5HEvJF47Xok/s1600-h/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520quilting%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="MQGB Valentin quilting" style="display: inline" alt="MQGB Valentin quilting" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-eB2tmYh2QDk/VM03CXw02jI/AAAAAAAAD28/EeH4tA33UvU/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>Here’s a closeup. I used a white Aurifil so that the thread blends with the background fabrics where I stitched in the ditch while it stands out within the pinwheels.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-wh-oIb-CZrk/VM03DDsbSfI/AAAAAAAAD3E/_nwFhVHl0IM/s1600-h/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520closeup%252520quilting%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="MQGB Valentin closeup quilting" style="display: inline" alt="MQGB Valentin closeup quilting" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-iKgou_fWIZM/VM03D-DURMI/AAAAAAAAD3M/a4mh1PQxzvY/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520closeup%252520quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I machine embroidered the quilt label and one of our bee memberes stitched it down by hand. Who would have thought that Aurifil’s cotton thread doubles up as embroidery thread, too?!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-hrXVWEb9Q1A/VM03Eo0wmtI/AAAAAAAAD3U/ioDa_kp2u7o/s1600-h/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520machine%252520embroidery%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="MQGB Valentin machine embroidery" style="display: inline" alt="MQGB Valentin machine embroidery" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-kYieIgzZFxI/VM03Ffzw-NI/AAAAAAAAD3c/HOm9HIsZZV8/MQGB%252520Valentin%252520machine%252520embroidery_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="550" height="550"></a></p> <p>This is the finished label and you can see the flannel backing I chose. I quickly decided that I needed to make a second, a better quilt for my new (and first) niece.</p> <p>My sister did NOT want all those pink and rosy colours so I opted for low volume fabrics with some colour mixed in.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-p-4ekfqynjc/VK7-G_Kg0bI/AAAAAAAADzo/XUfZnV-rMIg/s1600-h/wip%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="wip" style="display: inline" alt="wip" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-WVUO50TGmZ8/VK7-H0YVAEI/AAAAAAAADzw/7yioMcAcQZE/wip_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p>Trimming blocks in girl-ish fabrics – that does not happen often over here… I might even have enjoyed the tedious work. A bit.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-SFuzAsaWfQ0/VK7-JEDwBaI/AAAAAAAADz4/8mhiNrNQaAc/s1600-h/trimming%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="trimming" style="display: inline" alt="trimming" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-txql3DS4iwM/VK7-J6K6-hI/AAAAAAAAD0A/rJDHQpMi1LM/trimming_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p>I let the blocks form little wonky multicolour gems. With just a bit of pink or violet or rose. Then I backed it with a multicolour dotted flannel, chose a variegating Aurifil thread, grading from blue over pink into white, and free motion quilted it with “organic” straight lines…</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-jZyY3AaZrIg/VK7-K0RyW9I/AAAAAAAAD0I/xHpsnyM6dNM/s1600-h/Karla%252520Quilting%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Karla Quilting" style="display: inline" alt="Karla Quilting" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-zEftX7gWV30/VK7-MB9zyVI/AAAAAAAAD0Q/ldAyHo-bG-o/Karla%252520Quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>… and little petals within the gems. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-wGOEt5hITHY/VK7-M00TtzI/AAAAAAAAD0Y/TN8uvVHiCEQ/s1600-h/Karla%252520Details%252520of%252520Quilting%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Karla Details of Quilting" style="display: inline" alt="Karla Details of Quilting" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-lJGL349XVNY/VK7-NoirzWI/AAAAAAAAD0g/VYRkHKEmpKU/Karla%252520Details%252520of%252520Quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>It makes a lovely design on the back of the quilt (if I dare say so myself):</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-KR0X6RXWkQE/VK7-Ofpxr5I/AAAAAAAAD0o/hpVzl7cJu9s/s1600-h/Karla%252520Quilting%252520detail%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Karla Quilting detail" style="display: inline" alt="Karla Quilting detail" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-6n2wsLdszRk/VK7-PQmVQ9I/AAAAAAAAD0w/JdqYPdNHD4U/Karla%252520Quilting%252520detail_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="640"></a></p> <p>This time I added the lettering after I finished the quilting. Epic Fail.<p>This is an unusual blog post about a baby quilt that I made for my newborn niece (my first niece!). I devided a jelly roll of Momo’s Oh Deer! into boy-ish and girl-ish prints and used the majority of girl-ish prints for a stacked strips pattern. Everything went well until it reached quilt-top-stage.</p> <p>Then I wanted to appliqué the name and things started to get out of control.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-T_kiFp4jPy0/VK2mYPzX5kI/AAAAAAAADxc/vFKxJiOLD6U/s1600-h/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Seam%252520Ripper%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Karla Oh Deer Seam Ripper" style="display: inline" alt="Karla Oh Deer Seam Ripper" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-bNBLMF5iUwA/VK2mZMjFJ2I/AAAAAAAADxk/auiPrd4JZ-0/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Seam%252520Ripper_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="480" height="480"></a></p> <p>Just so you know: doublecheck the direction of the letters before you fuse them to the background and before raw-edge-appliquéing them )o:</p> <p>Maybe a hint that I chose <a href="http://grapes-hearts.blogspot.de/2015/01/oh-deer-baby-boy-quilt.html" target="_blank">the wrong font</a>?!</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-e0TAPoO-txg/VK2maJA82jI/AAAAAAAADxs/LaLfbvtBf9A/s1600-h/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Quilt%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Karla Oh Deer Quilt" style="display: inline" alt="Karla Oh Deer Quilt" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-9iL_NMZny5U/VK2ma6d4kII/AAAAAAAADx0/Ddc_fBlehHI/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Quilt_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="480" height="480"></a></p> <p>I chose a piece of flannel and a left-over piece of batting that was just big enough and started quilting pebbles. Within the 2,5” strips I simply outlined the seams of every other strip.</p> <p>Several thread breakes made quilting tough and enervating.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-s7APpW6UyMA/VK2mb19KFDI/AAAAAAAADx8/L32RxuKUrKA/s1600-h/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Quilting%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Karla Oh Deer Quilting" style="display: inline" alt="Karla Oh Deer Quilting" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ZzHcYjGGIEA/VK2mcU6fHDI/AAAAAAAADyE/JVyaMPEC-Lg/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="480" height="480"></a></p> <p>The binding was made from a mixture of white fabrics and leftover strips.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-i2f2kgiDtuU/VK2mdSWdAFI/AAAAAAAADyM/_X1vbPQIs0U/s1600-h/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Binding%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Karla Oh Deer Binding" style="display: inline" alt="Karla Oh Deer Binding" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-zw985NvhCIM/VK2meKHzmiI/AAAAAAAADyU/kiPY8GZ2INY/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Binding_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="480" height="480"></a></p> <p>When I finished quilting and binding, I popped the quilt in the washer like I do with all newly-made quilts. </p> <p>This is the mess that came out of the washer together with the quilt. And another big ball of fibres came out of the dryer afterwards. It turns out the batting was a leftover from <a href="http://grapes-hearts.blogspot.de/2013/03/a-paper-pieced-baby-quilt.html" target="_blank">the other bearding quilt</a>. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-W3G3_c6YkUU/VK2me0xTE3I/AAAAAAAADyc/3ScJxQP9Cfs/s1600-h/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Bearding%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Karla Oh Deer Bearding" style="display: inline" alt="Karla Oh Deer Bearding" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-mpzA32JNvQk/VK2mfv2EJ4I/AAAAAAAADyk/tUFhG934N7E/Karla%252520Oh%252520Deer%252520Bearding_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="480" height="480"></a></p> <p>This phenomenon is known als “bearding”. The fibres of the batting penetrade the fabrics on both sides (top and backing). The more fibres you pull out the worse it gets.</p> <p>I am so angry with whoever produced the batting (I threw away the packing before I finished the first bearding quilt) and I am angry with myself: I should have thrown away ALL the leftover batting pieces that I had <a href="http://grapes-hearts.blogspot.de/2013/03/a-paper-pieced-baby-quilt.html" target="_blank">when the batting ruined the first quilt.</a></p> <p>I was so disappointed with the result that I even forgot to take a photo of the finished quilt before I gave it to my sister. I contemplated throwing it away but decided it could be used as a wall hanging, seeing it had hangers at the back.</p> <p>I sincerely hope this will never ever happen to you!<br>Happy Quilting<br>Christine</p> <div class="blogger-post-footer"><div class="linkwithin_div"></div></div>grapes and heartshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01429193712115791817noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1780690398277149652.post-29479021845342734262015-01-06T08:54:00.000+01:002015-01-06T08:54:00.189+01:00Elmer baby boy quilt<p>Our friends had their first baby in November and when I asked her what kind of quilt she’d liked to have for the baby she said: “Elmer”.</p> <p>Well. So much the better! I always wanted to make a solids-only version of <a href="http://grapes-hearts.blogspot.de/2013/10/dare-to-be-different-finished-quilt.html" target="_blank">Elmer</a>! Et voilà:</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-M8h33wv_1Qk/VKpfmZy4iAI/AAAAAAAADu0/0RJ_wq7Antk/s1600-h/Elmer%252520fused%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Elmer fused" style="display: inline" alt="Elmer fused" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-TL-lRaXFvwc/VKpfnP8xyyI/AAAAAAAADu8/BG5VQAz6fdc/Elmer%252520fused_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p>He really looks like the original from the book:</p> <p><a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51fA9syY2qL.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51fA9syY2qL.jpg"></a></p> <p>Above you can see Elmer fused to the background and here he comes “unassembled”:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-P-na0mpoJ9E/VKpfn4obdZI/AAAAAAAADvE/2f1AG-c7yX0/s1600-h/Elmer%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Elmer" style="display: inline" alt="Elmer" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ANkSfiJyOrs/VKpfoqDEPeI/AAAAAAAADvM/-CpIK3iM3R0/Elmer_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>Then I had to wait for the baby to be born because I wanted to include the name. They named the little boy “Valentin” and this is me during one of our MQG sew-ins:</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-MZGMiOPQSpM/VKpfpaCV9QI/AAAAAAAADvU/00n4_npdC3k/s1600-h/Embroidering%252520name%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Embroidering name" style="display: inline" alt="Embroidering name" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-z1CMp7qdZh8/VKpfqIzfK8I/AAAAAAAADvc/yn8ZeXFN2k4/Embroidering%252520name_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="360" height="480"></a> </p> <p>Can you beleive I acutally embroidered the name?! Me, who hates handstitching?! But as I told you, every name has a “hidden” font. Valentin called for handembroidery.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0Z0flUv6d0Y/VKpfqzpnoRI/AAAAAAAADvk/tHzQjuU0pBk/s1600-h/Embroidered%252520name%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Embroidered name" style="display: inline" alt="Embroidered name" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-QX8z8--jebM/VKpfr-Fu5KI/AAAAAAAADvs/IF2lHoY7QsA/Embroidered%252520name_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>For the back I chose a simple patchwork of kona cotton solids from various charm packs.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-oKDSh4rS6vI/VKpfslqRxkI/AAAAAAAADv0/p7xjSixwPjk/s1600-h/Valentin%252520back%252520Kopie%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="Valentin back Kopie" style="display: inline" alt="Valentin back Kopie" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-s-oUBCYqnZw/VKpftqkYniI/AAAAAAAADv8/dDP0y4Dg2EM/Valentin%252520back%252520Kopie_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="853"></a></p> <p>The free motion quilting was once again done with Aurifil thread in light grey. A baby boy quilt.<p>I made a Baby Quilt for my cousin’s first baby. As it was meant to be a surprise I asked my auntie what colour scheme my cousin chose for the pram, the nursery, etc. She said the pram was brown but the overall preference was multicolour.</p> <p>That turned out to be more difficult than I had foreseen. I have almost no browns in my stash. Eventually I found a charm pack of Momo’s Oh Deer! that had just enough brown and lots of different additional colours.</p> <p>Here’s what I made for the little boy that was born in October (I hand delivered it last week so it’s safe to show you now):</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-2PmTyHXtjAM/VKnBzpZPs7I/AAAAAAAADs8/M0J2uT8T7cA/s1600-h/Felix%252520Quilt%252520Kopie%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="Felix Quilt Kopie" style="display: inline" alt="Felix Quilt Kopie" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-FQdHBB-0ziE/VKnB08FfEzI/AAAAAAAADtE/GIJXladu4ag/Felix%252520Quilt%252520Kopie_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="725"></a></p> <p>I had previously opted for a different border but I am so glad I took it off and made a new one.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-o-2VXy-0XQU/VKnB2GDMA4I/AAAAAAAADtM/Z-8O5h36pxw/s1600-h/dotted%252520border%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="dotted border" style="display: inline" alt="dotted border" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-AfRXQ8wLVbI/VKnB3MmI4dI/AAAAAAAADtU/7OAVktmS3NM/dotted%252520border_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="310" height="310"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-TxPeTEX2aLo/VKnB4qu6uEI/AAAAAAAADtc/ZlHbLk9iX9I/s1600-h/seam%252520ripper%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="seam ripper" style="display: inline" alt="seam ripper" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Lk_6im4HSuA/VKnB5Bv2TZI/AAAAAAAADtk/ReXGwR8Hroo/seam%252520ripper_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="310" height="310"></a></p> <p>I free motion quilted it with a variegated yellow-orange-white Aurifil, using a dogwood design, availing myself of the seams as guidelines in the centre…</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qBC8RkKKJKE/VKnB6LIaH3I/AAAAAAAADts/arVp8WvKfI0/s1600-h/Felix%252520Detail%252520of%252520Quilting%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Felix Detail of Quilting" style="display: inline" alt="Felix Detail of Quilting" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-usnVTHuT0JE/VKnB6xCpwKI/AAAAAAAADt0/57hF-kwp7Y8/Felix%252520Detail%252520of%252520Quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>…and marking chalk lines (half the size, i.e. 2,5”), that I followed when quilting the border. </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-4gJqiMI2HRY/VKnB75bB2zI/AAAAAAAADt8/Whi6fguoH2Q/s1600-h/Felix%252520Detail%252520of%252520Border%252520Quilting%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Felix Detail of Border Quilting" style="display: inline" alt="Felix Detail of Border Quilting" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-S8yhOV2LZas/VKnB8refjAI/AAAAAAAADuE/kyxpU0HOnBs/Felix%252520Detail%252520of%252520Border%252520Quilting_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>A added a brown ric rac border all around the centre and appliquéd his name with my sewing machine. This raw edge appliqué was rather difficult as the letters were so thin and small but it turned out to be my favourite lettering appliqué ever. </p> <p>(Did you know that I choose individual free fonts from the web for every name? I think that each name needs it’s own font. Some names look great in handwriting, others look better in capitals, etc.) Call me weird but that’s how I roll.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-abBkvq5T3Ig/VKnB9gNAKgI/AAAAAAAADuM/R0aMnfvUmQU/s1600-h/Felix%252520Applique%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Felix Applique" style="display: inline" alt="Felix Applique" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-GkgHNSfTrDY/VKnB-rYHp8I/AAAAAAAADuU/-w76jeP2Vv8/Felix%252520Applique_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427"></a></p> <p>For the backing I chose a cuddly brown flannel that was just big enough. I finished the quilt with a striped fabric (Ann Kelle’s Remix) that matches the top perfectly and made use of my favourite triple zig zag stitch.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ULYYxJr4yGA/VKnB_63d04I/AAAAAAAADuc/Y-MWPkJC914/s1600-h/Felix%252520Binding%252520and%252520Backing%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="Felix Binding and Backing" style="display: inline" alt="Felix Binding and Backing" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-kp2lT00UjAs/VKnCAtjhypI/AAAAAAAADuk/-u6dRLzeUYU/Felix%252520Binding%252520and%252520Backing_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="428"></a></p> <p>I am a bit annoyed that I chose different thread colours for the top and the back. There are some places where the bobbin thread is visible on the top and vice versa. Oh well, it is done and I hope that little Felix doesn’t care. I saw this hashtag somewhere and think it is appropriat here: #doneisbetterthanperfect</p> <p>Happy Quilting!</p> <p>Christine</p> <div class="blogger-post-footer"><div class="linkwithin_div"></div></div>grapes and heartshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01429193712115791817noreply@blogger.com3
